This girl sits happily with her sheet music with staves on her lap. This is a good example of Bijlert's favourite low-life settings along with an allegorical or moralistic overlay, which disguises seventeenth-century erotica as a personification of music. The woman is promiscuous or prostitute: her beckoning smile and partially exposed tit are forms of seduction, both painterly and sexual. Shown in a candle-lit interior, this painted coquette would have both accelerated life force and embodied it.
