It is a large, streamlined bird with long, narrow wings. Adults are easily recognized by size, color and markings. Young birds may resemble a great shearwater at first glance, but can be recognized by a long, pointed head and beak, pointed tail and characteristic movements. The plumage of the adult bird is not obtained until the fourth to sixth year. The ochre yellow head is paler outside the breeding season. Adults are about 89-102 centimeters tall and weigh 2.5 to 3 kilograms, and can be 170-180 cm wide when they fully extend their wings. The body is white, the tail pointed and they have black wing tips. The head is yellowish with a blue eye ring. They dive for fish in spectacular fashion and can do so at speeds of 100 km/hr when dropped.
