The endangered swan, after Jan Asselijn's painting of 1650 feat. Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh from 1889.
Energetically, a swan defends her nest against a dog. The fight was interpreted politically in later centuries: the white swan was understood as the statesman Johan de Witt, murdered in 1672, defending the country against its enemies. With that interpretation, the painting entered the National Gallery of Art (the forerunner of the Rijksmuseum) as the first purchase in 1800.
With this work, you bring two old masters into your home. In fact, behind the swan, Vincent van Gogh's painting Starry Night is visible.
The original of the Endangered Swan comes from the collection of the Rijksmuseum. The original can be seen there in the Gallery of Honor. Object number SK-A-4
Starry Night is on display at the MOMA in New York.
