James Abbott McNeill Whistler (Lowell (Massachusetts, USA), July 10, 1834 - London, United Kingdom July 17, 1903) was an American painter, etcher, lithographer and writer, who lived most of his life in the United Kingdom.
He is perhaps best known for the painting of his mother done almost entirely in black and white, entitled Arrangement in Gray and Black, No. 1 but usually called Whistler's Mother for short.
