Italian landscape with draughtsman, Jan Both, c. 1650 - c. 1652 oil on canvas, h 187cm × w 240cm.
Over such a large painting, the gaze can wander. Following the road, crossing the bridge, we see a well-to-do traveller in a sedan chair in the distance. Mules carry his luggage. With the illustrator in front of the bridge by the waterfall, Both wants us to believe that he painted it all to reality. Yet this depiction was composed at home.
