Irving Ramsey Wiles was a master of a full spectrum of techniques and painting styles, ranging from portraits to genre and outdoor scenes. This painting reflects his enthusiasm for the subjects he chose. It is a fine example of the bold impressionist style Wiles used to capture the famous New England whaler Wanderer. The 300-ton whaling bark 'Wanderer' was built in Mattapoisett Massachusetts in 1878. She was 35 meters long with a width of 27 feet and pulled up to 4.5 meters below her waterline. Known as the last whaler to sail from New Bedford, she was driven ashore and sunk during a hurricane at Cuttyhunk in Buzzard's Bay in the early 1920s.
Whaling or whaling is the hunting and killing of whales, primarily for whale crane and meat. The vessel used to hunt whales is called a whaler, as is the captain of such a vessel. Whales are usually caught with a harpoon.
