About ‘Iris’ by Jeroen Quirijns

An iconic flower named after the mythological goddess of the rainbow; its name literally means ‘ 'regenboog' of 'bode der goden'’
Symbolically, the iris represents the message ‘ "ik heb bericht voor je" ’.
I have used the image of the iris 'ingesloten' with a black border and a light-to-dark effect to make the iris stand out more clearly; the orange/ochre background lends it a pleasant, warm feel.
The interplay of lines with the eyes symbolises communication; this painting was created at the same time as ‘ "Tulp" ’, which is also available in this shop. The painting dates from 2001.
The iris remains an absolute frontrunner in cultivation and trade and is also a ‘Holland Glorie’ product; as'n 65 million iris bulbs are sold directly to customers for their gardens.
8 May is International Iris Day – a nice day to remember! And a lovely gift to give, perhaps in combination with a tulip.
