Operation Eagle Claw, known as Operation Tabas in Iran, was an operation by the U.S. Armed Forces commissioned by U.S. President Jimmy Carter to try to end the hostage taking in Iran by rescuing 52 embassy personnel held captive in the United States Embassy, Tehran, on April 24, 1980. Its failure and the humiliating public debacle that followed damaged American prestige worldwide. Carter mainly blamed his loss in the 1980 American presidential election for his failure to secure the release of the hostages.
