advertising poster for the International Water Exhibition held in the Belgian city of Liège between May and November 1939. The original title reads: International Water Exhibition, Liege. This poster features fantastic artwork by artist Forg with a variation on the goddess theme with the 13 goddesses sitting in a pyramid shape, looking out over the canal where a sailboat and a warship are sailing.
The theme of the exhibit was water management and was opened by King Leopold III of Belgium on May 20, 1939. The canal itself was opened on July 30, 1939. The exposition was to end in November 1939, but on Aug. 31, explosives detonated under the Val Benoit Bridge and the Ougrée Bridge by lightning, killing 20 and injuring 24. The explosives were placed by the Belgian army, which wanted to destroy the bridges in case of war.
