About the artwork

Incatrail to Machu Picchu, Peru
The Inca Trail is a world famous hiking trail that ends in Machu Picchu . The Inca Trail starts in the Sacred Valley of the Urubamba River and ends at the breathtaking ruins of Machu Picchu. The route is 45 km long and takes three to five days. The path winds through high mountains and dense, dark, subtropical forests.

There is a residential zone in the city with a large square, a military zone and a religious zone in the middle. Between the religious buildings were also the living quarters of the court. In the religious zone there are temples for the sun god and the moon goddess. There is also a sundial on the highest point of the city.

The town of Machu Picchu is located between steep mountains, at an altitude of about 2400 meters, in the region of the town of Cuzco. The Incas reached the city via a steep path. The hike lasted several days and the city was therefore difficult to reach. Nowadays it is also possible to reach the city by train and bus.
Machu Picchu is enclosed between two steep peaks: the Machu Picchu (literally "old mountain" in Quechua) and the Huayna Picchu ("young mountain" in Quechua). The strong-flowing Urubamba runs through the rock valley at an altitude of 1750 metres.
