This Eurasian collared dove sits comfortably in the feeding bowl in the garden. That bowl hangs from a feeding pole about 150 centimetres high, and the light from the afternoon sun shone like a spotlight just on the breast, leaving the surroundings in relative darkness. So this collared dove lit up completely. It also saw me standing behind the back door with my camera at the ready, looking at me.
Eurasian collared doves belong to the pigeon family and are common in the Netherlands. They originally came from the Balkans and earlier from India, and during the 20th century they moved west, with a first breeding in 1950, in Oldenbroek.
The plumage is the same in males and females. It is unclear which sex this specimen has.
