Impression, soleil levant (Impression, rising sun) is an 1873 painting by French painter Claude Monet, from which the art movement impressionism takes its name.
The subject of the painting is the port of Le Havre on a misty day, painted in very loose brushstrokes that suggest rather than really outline the subject. In a bluish mist, apart from a small boat, we can barely see the masts of some sailing ships and in the background, almost invisible in the fog, the quays with cranes and chimneys outlined with some vertical and oblique lines. The orange sun, just above the horizon, draws a ray of light on the water. Monet captures the fleeting moment where land, water and sky still seem to be one in the mist before the bright daylight will mark everything out sharply.
