About "Image manipulation: Global Femicide and Domestic Violence Portrayed"

by Elianne van Turennout

About the artwork

This powerful image manipulation portrays the terrible reality of global femicide. Femicide is a term used when women are murdered because they are women. This tragic phenomenon is unfortunately common in domestic settings, with the perpetrator often being one's own partner. The image shows a woman slowly disappearing into a wall, symbolising how these women not only disappear physically, but are also slowly rendered invisible and erased by society.

The inspiration for this concept comes from the brutal murder of Pınar Gültekin and Poland's disturbing attempts to legalise domestic violence. This picture evokes strong emotions and forces the viewer to reflect on the often invisible nature of domestic violence and the inhumane treatment many women suffer worldwide.

The woman in the image seems to gradually disappear into the wall, highlighting the gradual and silent disappearance of femicide victims. This image confronts the viewer with the stark reality that many of these crimes go unnoticed and the victims often disappear from the collective consciousness. It calls for awareness and action against this form of violence.

This image manipulation is not only a work of art, but also a powerful call for social change. It is suitable for human rights exhibitions, feminist art galleries, and as a visual aid in campaigns against domestic violence and femicide. This artwork has the potential to make a profound impact and contribute to awareness and the fight against these injustices.
