St. Anne, the mother of the Virgin Mary, stands on an altar in an unusual architectural space. It is crumbling to reveal the sky above. Anne holds her hands in prayer and gazes at the sky. Two angels descend and bring Mary's soul to her womb. The miracle is considered below by the Church Fathers - Saints Ambrose, Augustine, Gregory and Jerome.
The majestic altarpiece of Pordenone represents the Immaculate Conception, that is, the conception of the Virgin Mary. For centuries, the Immaculate Conception was debated and fervently defended by the Franciscan order. This painting was commissioned by Virginia Pallavicino in 1529 for her family's chapel at the Franciscan church in Cortemaggiore (near Piacenza). Pordenone also painted the chapel with illusionist architecture, a motif repeated in the altarpiece.
Giovanni Antonio de' Sacchis (1484 - 1539), known as Il Pordenone, was a Venetian painter. Vasari describes his life under the erroneous name Giovanni Antonio Licinio.
