Ijsselmeer Netherlands.
The IJsselmeer is part of the IJsselmeer area and was created by closing off part of the Zuiderzee. The Afsluitdijk was completed on 28 May 1932 and the official name change of the closed part of the Zuiderzee took place on 20 September 1932. The lake was named after the river IJssel, which flows into it. At the same time, the non-enclosed part was named the Wadden Sea.[1] Later, the Frisian and Groninger wadden were also included in the Wadden Sea.[2]
The Zuiderzee came into being in the early thirteenth century AD, after seawater flowed into the Almere during floods. (For more information regarding this, see: origin of Zuiderzee). The Romans knew the Almere under the name Flevomeer
