When the Vikings colonized Iceland, they brought with them viif kinds of animals: horses, sheep, pigs, goats and cows. The pigs soon turned out not to be suitable for life in Iceland. Goats appeared to love Iceland, but to this day they are not very popular. The horse (hesturinn) and the sheep (sauðkindin) play a much more important role as utility animals. Every horse or sheep (and in fact every goat) that currently roams Iceland descends from a herd originally brought by the Vikings.
