The Askja is an active volcano in the Ódáðahraun, a remote part of the central plateau of Iceland in the Vatnajökull National Park. Öskjuvatn (Lake Askja) is 220 metres deep and was formed during the 1875 eruption. Right next to Öskjuvatn is Viti, a small explosion crater that is also filled with water. The water contains a lot of dissolved minerals, which gives it an opal blue/green appearance and is heated by geothermal energy to a pleasant temperature so that you can swim in it. The water is however poisonous to drink.
