The Northern Lights photographed in Iceland in the winter of 2018-2019. The aurora borealis is caused by the solar wind. This solar wind is especially strong during eruptions (of plasma clouds) on the sun, where large amounts of charged particles are thrown into the universe. Then the aurora borealis becomes more visible to extremely strong. Sometimes it can be visible in the Netherlands and Flanders. The earth's magnetic field causes the particle stream to be deflected in the vicinity of the earth and to penetrate the atmosphere at increased speed near the North and South poles. The particles coming from the sun contain a lot of energy, which is transferred to oxygen and nitrogen atoms in the upper kilometers of the atmosphere by collisions. This energy is eventually released and emitted at 80 to 1000 kilometres altitude in the form of the colourful aurora borealis.
