Ice hair, also called hair ice or snowbeard, is a rare natural phenomenon in which a hairy, woolly ice structure forms on dead and wet heartwood, i.e. not on the bark, of deciduous trees. It is outwardly compressed water that freezes during frost.
Ice hair is very delicate and melts away immediately on contact. If ice hair is exposed to sunlight, it will quickly sublimate and disappear. Ice hair is therefore found early in the morning or only in shady places.
