The first thing that catches the eye is the movement: ice-blue and turquoise strokes fan outwards from the centre of the canvas, like the petals of a flower just beginning to open. White light breaks through everywhere, sometimes as a sharp streak, sometimes as a soft haze, making the painting seem to breathe. If you look for longer, you’ll see that the paint lies in thick, textured layers, with the rough texture of the canvas peeking through here and there. In the bottom right-hand corner, where all the streaks converge, a wafer-thin thread of gold leaf glimmers, almost hidden, as if a spark had been left behind at that precise spot. It arose from the idea of a delicate texture: I wanted to create something that feels delicate and fragile, almost dreamlike, without it becoming heavy or overwhelming. No specific subject, purely abstract, purely emotional. Interior designers often advise opting for soothing, airy surfaces in a room, and I kept that in mind: fewer elements, more space between the forms. The atmosphere is cool and calm, almost spacious, like the moment just before sunrise above the water. The colours balance each other out; nothing shouts, everything whispers. This creates a sense of tranquillity and clarity – the sort of tranquillity that arises when you need do nothing for a moment except look. It is a digital artwork, constructed to resemble thick, textured layers of paint, as if created with a palette knife, featuring smooth transitions and a subtle sheen on the highest points. In the home, this works best in a space where you want to unwind: the living room, the bedroom, a study where you need to focus, or even the hall, as that first moment of respite upon entering. It is a piece that does not demand attention, yet lingers in the mind, just like a memory of a cool morning.
