About the artwork
Photographed during our special birding trip in Colombia.
We were allowed to stay 2 nights in February at 3,000 metres at Hacienda El Bosque. It was cold and rainy but this certainly didn't stop us from going out. Together with our guide, we went out early in the morning in search of special bird species.
I could dream of such a beautiful birding trip to South America for years. My wish was also to capture the swift hummingbird. In practice, this was even more difficult than expected. In one second, the hummingbird flies as far as 385 times its own body length. That's as much as 100 kilometres per hour. So a hummingbird can almost overtake you on the motorway. During that top speed, it flaps its wings up and down 15 to 80 times a second. They hardly sit still. Photographing a hummingbird requires extreme concentration.
You are therefore looking at a photo where I could jump a hole in the air. That feeling of finally shooting that photo you've always had in mind.
