Marken, an idyllic peninsula in the Markermeer. In the thirteenth century Marken was separated from the mainland during a storm. A period of centuries of isolation followed for the inhabitants, who lived from fishing. Marken was only connected to the mainland by a dike in 1957, and has been a peninsula ever since. But the village has kept its authentic character and the inhabitants keep their traditions alive. Because Marken regularly had to deal with floods, the inhabitants built their houses on mounds. You won't find these characteristic houses anywhere else in the world. Enjoy the special atmosphere on this photogenic peninsula.
