About ‘Hot-headed in Ostend’ by Geert Van Baelen

This black-and-white photograph captures a striking moment in which a flock of seagulls takes flight simultaneously over the rugged North Sea at Ostend. The dark clouds, the churning water and the sturdy breakwaters create a dramatic atmosphere in which the birds command the viewer’s full attention. The combination of movement, contrast and natural elements makes this photograph a powerful image of the Belgian coast.

Ostend is a favourite destination for photographers and nature lovers. Along the breakwaters, seagulls are constantly on the move, making every shot unique. In black and white, the textures of the waves, the rocks and the threatening sky are brought out even more strongly, whilst the birds taking flight add a sense of freedom and dynamism.

This photograph captures not only the beauty of the coast, but also the unpredictable power of nature on the North Sea.
