The Horstermeer, or Horstermeerpolder is a reclaimed land, which was first drained in 1629 but was unable to be kept dry. It succeeded in 1882, but the polder is very special. It is leaky from below, unlike almost all other reclaimed land that has a watertight bottom. As a result, water enters not only from the sides, from the fighting lakes, but also fossil seawater from the subsoil. Many ditches therefore contain brackish water which was and is difficult for agriculture and horticulture. Keeping it dry also takes a lot of effort and causes unrest among residents as different plans are constantly being made for efficient management.
