Horse Marken Lighthouse Marken. The current lighthouse was designed by J. Valk and built in 1839 and stands on the eastern tip of the island. The tower has a lift height of 16 meters and a light range of 16.7 km.
The tower was started in 1700 as a square lighthouse. This was one of three lighthouses in Marken, The Ven and Durgerdam which in 1699 decided to mark the route of the Wadden Sea to Amsterdam. The towers were fitted with oil lamps according to the design by Jan van der Heyden.
In 1839, the square stone tower was replaced by a round iron copy on the old foundation. Later, a brick building built with a house and warehouse on the lighthouse, which gave the tower its characteristic shape.
In 1814 the tower was given a mistbel. In 1919 mistbel been replaced by a foghorn.
Regularly, the lighthouse suffer from drifting ice. In 1971 it was so bad that the tower was pushed several inches of place. Currently, the lighthouse is inhabited.
Since 1970, the tower has the status monument.
