The job as a data engineer in the Bathymetry working group at the Alfred Wegener Institute in Bremerhaven brings with it many privileges, such as taking part in a transit on Polarstern from Bremerhaven to South Africa in 2022 (PS132). Many interesting pictures could be taken during the journey in free minutes.
When the sun is at the right angle and the water is clear enough, the ocean sometimes reveals a few secrets on its surface. As Polarstern drifted over the water, we were able to observe small, narrow silhouettes on the sides of the ship, which seemed to follow the shadow play of the railing and the breaking sun. Only on closer inspection did it become clear that they were not an illusion, but rather hornets that penetrated just below the surface at rhythmic intervals and then dived back down again.
