Built between 1931 and 1936, Hoover Dam regulates the water flow of the once turbulent Colorado River. The main purpose of building the dam was to provide a reliable water supply and cheap electricity for the surrounding desert area. In this, mainly the city of Las Vegas, Nevada , 48 kilometres west, was important. Today, Hoover Dam generates power for the states of Nevada, Arizona and California. Construction of the dam created Lake Mead, which attracts many tourists every year for its many recreational opportunities. From the visitor centre, you have a great view of the structure and the desert-like, rocky surroundings.
