The hooded shrike or Blue-backed shrike (Lanius excubitor) is a bird the size of a blackbird with a distinctive hooked beak from the shrike family. The hooded shrike is an extremely rare breeding bird in the Netherlands, which migrates and winters in small numbers. The shrikes are easy to spot outside the breeding season because of their contrasting plumage and their habit of lurking for prey from the tops of trees and bushes on moorland.
