The sacred mountain Mount Kailash in western Tibet. This mountain is considered the center of the earth. The mountain is over 6,700 meters high and is not allowed to be climbed. Mount Kailash is a sacred mountain for Buddhists, Hindus and followers of the Bön religion.
Mount Kailash is one of my favorite places on earth. I have been to the sacred mountain and joined Tibetan pilgrims on a pilgrimage (kora) around the mountain. This was literally a highlight, as the trek was at an altitude of over 4,600 meters. The highest point was the Drolma-la of 5,630 meters altitude. The round trip was over 42 kilometers and it took me three days. I slept in simple accommodations near a monastery.
Prior to the pilgrimage, I attended the Saga Dawa festival, at the foot of the sacred mountain. During Saga Dawa, Tibetans honor the life of Sakyamuni Buddha. At Tarboche, where the festival is celebrated, there is a 20-meter flagpole. This is taken down during the festival and all prayer flags are replaced. The mast will be straightened. If the flagpole can be put up straight, it promises to be a prosperous year in good health and with a good harvest.
