At the centre of this wintry motif is a small group of hoarfrost-covered trees whose fine branches are covered in frozen dew. The crystals reflect the light and make the trees appear to be coated in silver. They stand close together, almost protectively, and appear striking and delicate at the same time.
A narrow path leads directly to the group of trees - straight as a die through a snow-covered meadow landscape. The lines of the path lend depth to the picture and almost inevitably draw the eye to the centre of the scene.
Behind the trees lies a bank of mist, which glows a soft pink in the light of the rising sun. The mist appears soft and translucent, as if it were enveloping the landscape in a veil of light. Above it, the sky opens up in clear blue - a quiet contrast to the warm colours below.
This composition thrives on the interplay of winter elements: hoar frost, snow, mist and light combine to create a scene of rare tranquillity and delicate balance. A picture that almost devoutly captures the moment between night and day, between cold and light.
