Portland Head Light is the oldest lighthouse in the US state of Maine.
As early as 1787, construction of the building began south of the port city of Portland, but it was soon abandoned due to lack of funding. In 1789, the first Congress of the United States of America provided 1,500 dollars to complete the lighthouse. After the completion in 1790 George Washington appointed Captain Joseph Greenleaf as the first lighthouse keeper.
Portland Head Light is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine that sits at the entrance of the shipping channel into Casco Bay. The headlight was the first built by the United States government.
