About ‘Hidden layers of time’ by Hans Kwaspen

I see beauty in impermanence. This abstract photographic work is a snapshot of time-the fragile balance between decay and texture, between what once was and what is yet to come. The flaking white paint reveals a deeper layer, a hidden history unfolding in abstract shapes and lines. It looks like a map of an unknown world, a landscape shaped by time and chance.

My inspiration comes from the art of matter-the visual poetry of weathered surfaces and layered structures. Artists like Aaron Siskind and Antoni Tàpies understand the power of texture and degradation, and I feel akin to their way of looking at things. An atmosphere of quiet contemplation emerges here, where imperfection takes on its own rhythm and layering creates an abstract depth.

What makes this work special is the way it challenges the viewer to look beyond the surface-to discover how time shapes matter. As an artwork on the wall, it brings a subtle but intriguing energy to the space. It invites reflection and raises questions: about impermanence, transformation and the stories hidden in the everyday. This work is not just an image, but a tangible experience that reveals itself again and again.
