The Lockheed C-130 is a medium-weight transport aircraft that can carry up to 17,500 kilograms, 128 infantrymen or 92 paratroopers over a distance of about 5,500 kilometers. The Hercules can land on and take off from very primitive airfields with short runways. At the rear of the fuselage is a large loading ramp for loading and unloading cargo. This rear loading ramp allows the aircraft to load and unload without having to use airport loading facilities. This flap can also be opened during flight to allow paratroopers to jump. The transport aircraft is a high-decker, powered by 4 T56-A-15LFE turboprop engines. It owes its so-called STOL (short take off and landing) capabilities to these 4 relatively heavy engines. The aircraft is also used for the evacuation of wounded people. In that case, 92 stretchers can be carried on board.
