Simultaneous to the famous 1952 Nus Bleus, Nu bleu aux bas verts was a model for a lithograph Tériade published in the magazine Verve in 1954. It shows a dancer in three-quarter view. Her legs are green up to mid-thigh and her forearms are fuchsia. These colours accentuate the figure's dynamism and the sense of weightlessness she exudes. The plant motif on the right completes the composition, suggesting an equivalence between man and plant through colour and formal connections.
Henri Émile Benoît Matisse (Le Cateau-Cambrésis, France, 31 December 1869 - Cimiez, near Nice, 3 November 1954) was a French painter, graphic artist and sculptor. Along with Pablo Picasso, he is remembered as one of the most influential and innovative artists of the 20th century and artist in Fauvism, a style with brightly contrasting colours.
