The Arnhem Ship Bridge was a pontoon bridge in Arnhem over the Lower Rhine. The ship bridge was located west of the city on the spot where today the Nelson Mandela Bridge is located. It provided the main connection over the Rhine until the construction of the Rhine Bridge in 1935.
The first ship bridge was constructed in 1603. This made the city more accessible for the farmers from the Betuwe and for the merchants from Nijmegen who previously crossed over by ferry. The ship's bridge consisted of a number of small ships with a bridge deck on top, over which people could walk or ride from one bank to the other. When a ship wanted to pass on the river, part of the bridge was removed. Whoever wanted to get to the other side had to wait; this could sometimes take a long time. When there was a lot of ice on the river, the whole bridge was taken away and put in the harbour.
