About ‘Helsinki Cathedral at night, Finland’ by Adelheid Smitt

Helsinki Cathedral, also known as the Lutheran Cathedral, is an Evangelical Lutheran church. It was designed by the Prussian architect Carl Ludvig Engel. Helsinki had only just become the capital of Finland in the early 19th century, and the architect was commissioned to create designs that would ensure the city truly had the appearance of a capital.
The cathedral was built on Senate Square, Helsinki’s central square. On all sides stand buildings by Engel, all in the Neoclassical style.
This photo was taken in the evening in winter, with snow on the steps leading up to the church.
