The house was built in 1645 in Dutch-classical style, as a successor to the knight's manor of Heemstede, which was 500 metres south. The client was Hendrick de Pieck van Wolfsweerd. Maria van Winssen, lady of Heemstede and scion of the Van Winssen family, was the castle's first resident. The house is characterised by a symmetrical style. At all four corners, angular towers are half-included in the building. There is a wide moat around the house. Because in the 17th century castles no longer served as defensible fortresses, luxury and pleasant living were considered when building the new Heemstede House.
