Head of Medusa - Franz von Stuck

by Accessible Art

Franz von Stuck, a German Symbolist painter, created this eerie and recognizable piece. Even though he painted Medusa several times, this close-up of her head stands out as one of his most potent and disturbing works.
Medusa is portrayed by Stuck as a sadly beautiful and terrifying character rather than a hideous monster. Her face, which is shown with a smoothness that is almost classical, rises out of a jumbled mass of writhing, dark snakes that blend in with the black background. The composition, which only concentrates on her hypnotic and scared expression, is incredibly cramped.
Medusa's bright, wide eyes are what give the painting its uncanny depth. They are pupilless and gaze out in sheer fear, as though she were both the sufferer and the perpetrator of her own terrifying curse. Stuck creates a sharp, dramatic contrast that intensifies the psychological stress by expertly using chiaroscuro to highlight her pale face against the oppressive gloom. The painting is a potent examination of horror, mortality, and existential dread, and it is a perfect illustration of the fin-de-siècle's obsession with the idea of the femme fatale—a figure of deadly, irresistible attractiveness.
