The Capitol in Havana is the most famous building of Cuba and the symbol of the city.
At the beginning of the 20th century, after gaining independence from Spain, Cuba needed a seat for the president and likewise a seat of government. For the construction, which began in 1926, the Cuban architects took their cue from previous sacred dome buildings, such as St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg, the Invalides Cathedral in Paris and St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. However, the U.S. Capitol, also used as the seat of government, had the greatest influence.
