The Capitol in Havana is the most famous building in Cuba and the symbol of the city.
At the beginning of the 20th century, after gaining independence from Spain, Cuba needed a seat for the president and also a seat of government. The Cuban architects based the construction, which began in 1926, on previous sacred domes, such as St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg, the Invalides Cathedral in Paris and St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. The greatest influence, however, was the US Capitol, also used as the seat of government.
