Hard coral is one of the most essential components of the ecosystem surrounding Mabul Island in Malaysia. This tropical island is renowned for its rich biodiversity and healthy coral reefs, which provide a habitat for countless marine species. Hard coral, composed of colonies of tiny polyps, forms the foundation of the coral reef and is crucial for maintaining the marine environment.
The structure of hard coral offers shelter and food for various fish, crustaceans, and other marine organisms. Species such as table corals and brain corals are prominent in the area and contribute to the complex habitat structure of the reef. Additionally, hard coral and the associated reefs play a vital role in protecting coastlines from erosion and storm damage.
Unfortunately, hard coral and their ecosystems are globally threatened by climate change, pollution, and overfishing. Efforts are being made in Mabul to protect and preserve these vulnerable ecosystems. Divers and snorkelers exploring the reefs around Mabul not only get to enjoy breathtaking beauty but also raise awareness about the importance of conserving these unique marine habitats.
