Hans Vredeman de Vries (Leeuwarden, 1527 - Hamburg, 1609) was a Dutch architect, fortification expert, art theorist, urban planner (avant la lettre), draugher and painter. He was one of the most influential artists of the 16th century because of his mastery of perspective, his publications, his designs and decorations.
In 1546 he moved to Amsterdam and Kampen. In 1549 he worked in Mechelen, where his brother worked as an organist. Under Pieter Coecke van Aelst he designed the triumphal arches that served for the entry of Emperor Charles V and King Philip II. He also studied Vitruvius and Sebastiano Serlio, translated by his teacher.
After the occupation of Antwerp by the Duke of Parma in 1585, Vredeman de Vries also left the city with his second wife Sara van Elsmer. He successively received commissions in Frankfurt am Main and Wolfenbüttel. Vredeman de Vries developed into an excellent and famous perspective artist.
