When a cholera epidemic broke out in Italy in 1873, the provincial government decided that the former palace and old convent should be used as a hospital, even though it would be absolutely unsuitable for that purpose. The hospital was finally closed in the 1990s.
Truus Nijland is a passionate photographer who has a penchant for abandoned buildings such as castles, monasteries, churches and industrial locations.
