The Haarlemmerpoort was completed in 1840, one day before the inauguration of King William II. The prince drove through it in triumph. The gate was given the official name Willemspoort.
But in popular parlance it remains called Haarlemmerpoort, replacing the previous Haarlemmerpoort that belonged to the 17th-century city wall.
Stadsherstel took him over from housing corporation Ymere and was able to restore him thanks to a crowd foundation. Since 2020 there has been talk of housing and catering space.
