About "Groningen in Suriname"

About the artwork

Village name Groningen in Suriname

In northern Suriname located in the Saramacca district lies the village of Groningen. It has a special history and strong ties to the Netherlands. Although much smaller than its Dutch counterpart, Groningen in Suriname has a unique place in the country's history and landscape.

Groningen in Suriname was founded in 1790 with the construction of Fort Groningen, named after the hometown of the then Dutch governor Jan Gerhard Wichers. The fort served to protect the surrounding plantations from attacks by Maroons, fugitive slaves who had organised themselves into communities in the rainforest. This defence made the village important in the early colonial period.

In the 19th century, around 1845, Groningen became the scene of a Dutch colonisation project. Dutch farmers, mainly from the provinces of Gelderland, Utrecht and Groningen, were encouraged to settle in the region to promote agriculture. Unfortunately, these attempts ended in failure due to diseases such as yellow fever and typhoid, which claimed many victims among the settlers. This led to the village never growing into the thriving agricultural centre the Dutch government had hoped for.
