De Rechtboomssloot dates from the first half of the 16th century. The canal is named after the 16th-century shipbuilder and mayor Cornelis Pietersz Boom. Boom, who himself lived on the Rechtboomssloot (on numbers 1 to 3), had around 1530 two ditches, the Rechtboomssloot and Kromboomssloot, broadened to canals to connect his shipyard on the Lastage with the IJ. The Kromboomsloot became a transept of the main shipping line Rechtboomssloot. As the names already indicate, the Recht(straight)boomssloot is straight while there is a bend in the Krom(Bend)boomssloot.
