The grey heron (Ardea cinerea) is a bird from the heron family. The grey heron is the best known representative of the family in Belgium and the Netherlands. The bird is also found in the temperate regions of Europe and Asia.
The grey heron is a carnivore and fish-eater that eats fish and amphibians, but other animals such as insects and small mammals are also caught. The bird is often seen in shallow areas of urban ditches and meadows; it is seen flying along canals, streams and near lakes; its breeding colonies are located in the middle of cities in high trees or in remote wooded areas.
In urban areas, the grey heron regularly visits garden ponds with fish. For goldfish and koi enthusiasts, the grey heron is considered a pest and is banned as much as possible. In harsh winters, grey herons have a hard time. A grey heron reaches an average age of 5 years.
