The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) is a bird in the woodpecker family (Picidae). It is a numerous and widespread resident bird in much of the Palearctic region. Here it breeds in forests and all kinds of cultivated landscapes. The great spotted woodpecker looks for its food in almost all vegetation layers. In summer, it feeds mainly on insects and other invertebrates, in winter mainly on plant food, such as conifer seeds.
