About "Good pooh."

About the artwork

When a large prey is caught, the hierarchy within a lion pride becomes apparent. The adult males get to eat first. When he's finished eating, the lionesses and cubs get the leftovers. A lion also eats carrion and sometimes steals food from other animals, like hyenas, leopards and cheetahs. The lion does not normally attack people. Sick or wounded animals settle for rather small prey animals, like rats, lizards, fish or even nuts.

If the leader(s) of a group is challenged by one or more wandering males, he will fight to remain the leader. Sometimes this is also done by male cubs that have grown up. Dominant lions and challengers are usually between five and ten years old. The loser must leave the group and the winner becomes or remains the leader. If there is a new leader, he will first kill all the cubs that are alive at that time. In this way he makes sure the females become fertile again (females are fertile as long as they don't have cubs) and he can reproduce.

There is no fixed mating season. It happens regularly that lionesses within a group go into estrus at the same time, as a result of which usually several cubs are born at the same time. Females also suckle the cubs of other females. The mortality among cubs is quite high, partly because new males kill cubs and because weaker cubs are usually left to their fate.
