Golden Buddha statue in the Pak Ou cave, Laos.
In the Pak Ou cave. The natural daylight falls exactly on a few Buddha statues.
25 kilometers from Luang Prabang are the Pak Ou Caves. It's actually two caves. One is about sixty meters above the Mekong, the other on the bank, here are most of the statues. The caves themselves are also spectacular. In the caves there are over 4,000 Buddha statues. This is a particularly impressive sight.
The Laotians call the Pak Ou Caves the 'Tam Ting', also known as the 'caves of the thousands of Buddha's'.
In the 8th century the 'spirit of nature', Phi, was already honoured here.
This was before Buddhism was known in Laos. The Buddha statues were later placed in the caves when Buddhism was accepted by the royal family in Laos. At the Pak Ou Caves, boat trips are organized. You get to the caves by ferry.
